WYOMING
Wyoming is a landlocked state in the Mountain West region of the U.S. It is the least populous state despite being the tenth largest by area, with Cheyenne as its capital and largest city. Its landscape includes the Rocky Mountains in the west and the High Plains in the east, with a semi-arid climate and substantial federal land holdings that include two national parks. It was the first state to grant women the right to vote and to elect a female governor. Sheridan is a city in Wyoming and the county seat of Sheridan County, with a population of 17,444 as of 2010, making it the sixth city in the state. It is located at the base of the Bighorn Mountains, where Little Goose Creek and Big Goose Creek converge to form Goose Creek. Originally named Mandel, the city was renamed in 1882 after General Philip Sheridan and experienced growth following the arrival of the railroad and coal mining in the 1890s. Transportation routes include Interstate 90 and the Sheridan County Airport, which offers flights to Denver. The area is known for its history of horse breeding and the introduction of polo by British officers in the 19th century.
